Dancing and drumming, the perfect combination!
Drumming may lie at the heart of Doris, but dancing embodies the rhythms and brings the sounds to life. At Doris you can dance as much as you like! Dance in the early morning light, dance on your way to the showers, dance while you’re waiting for your food in the cafés, dance round the fires and under the stars, oh and in the myriad workshops too! Dance styles, techniques and parties from around the globe.
“If you hear a different drummer – dreamer take a chance. The road you choose to travel means the difference in the dance.” D. Morgan.
“Any problem in the world can be solved by dancing.” James Brown.
There’s always a lot to choose from - feet on the grass African style, whirling to the beats or the soft melodies from improvisations on a Brazilian theme, reaching into the unknown and naming your animal spirit, salsa stepping, hip shaking, welly stomping, workshops and dance parties everyday. As always our dance classes are accompanied by live music from some of the best drummers around.
The Moroccan group Jil Gnawa will be sharing their dance in a workshop as well as bringing us a Lila - a healing ceremony with trance dance. We welcome back the energetic Mariana Pinho who will be bringing us samba reggae and maracatu dances from Brazil.
Then there’s Dr Olu Taiwo, with his unique and profound Animal Spirit dance workshops, our drum for dance workshop with Idrissa Camara where you can develop the relationship between drummer and dancer, tribal bellydance with Michelle Pender, flowing contemporary African dance with Denise Rowe, not to mention the wild and passionate Flamenco dance taught to us by Felipe de Algeciras and much more. We promise that advanced dancers will be stretched this year by maestro Nii Tagoe and new for 2011 is Egyptian stick dance for men and klezmer dance with Guy Schalom.

Different styles and different levels from across the globe, with something for everyone. Classes you can drop in just to try them out and classes you can follow all week to stretch yourself and learn deeply, with talented and award winning teachers.
You’ll get a chance to be inspired by the teachers when some of them perform at the African Party night. Watch the outstanding Nii Tagoe and other inspiring dancers and musicians as they ignite the night, join in on the dance floor and then relax at the end of the evening with sweet sounds from Seckou Keita, Anita Deaulne and others!
Warm up and warm down are an essential part of the classes, so try to arrive on time to look after yourself and don’t forget to bring your costumes to enhance the dance experience. There are also stalls where you can buy African cloth, and jingles, jangles and floaty scarves for Arabic style.
