Drum, Dance, Song & Ceremony
Summer School 2011
Intercultural Summer School August 9th to 14th 2011

A unique and family-friendly event with inspirational teachers from Africa, South America, Europe and Asia creating vibrant cultural exchange!

Our event is packed with international cultural workshops and activities for beginners, the experienced and more advanced participants. As always, to complement these, there is a full range of other activities including yoga, tai chi, a youth area, childrens area, creche, wellbeing area, open mic cafe sessions and special celebratory evenings culminating in our famous firelit Saturday night showcase, where most of the workshops get the chance to show each other what we've been doing all week.

You can choose your own pace and level of involvement, but be warned, we take our creativity seriously and we want to host the most enjoyable gathering you will have the good fortune to be at this year! So don't forget to bring your instruments, your party clothes and something white to wear to the Closing Ceremony on Sunday.

We are nestled into the Blackdown Hills, on a beautiful and accessible site with lovely trees and a view to savour. We have hot showers, clean loos, sauna, cafes and some stalls selling musical instruments and fairly traded items from around the world. One thing we don't have is a bar! You can buy a glass of wine with your dinner in the cafe, or a brandy hot chocolate in the Doris cafe but we prefer not to have a bar and so do most of our participants.

Bring your own tents, camper van or caravan, or hire a yurt or teepee from www.hearthworks.co.uk 01749 899 521.

Tribe of Doris has an international reputation for quality, inspiration and organising great events over 19 years. With around forty musical and cultural workshops a day to choose from, there's something for everyone. So if you are looking for something different this year and don't want to go abroad, come to the Intercultural Summer School and travel the world from the Devon Somerset border!

To get a good idea of what goes on at the Summer School, or see a typical day of workshops and information about the teachers who run them, download the 2008 programme.

NEW WORKSHOPS! Lots of different types of singing from around the world, another visit in from authentic Moroccan Gnawa musicians, Mexican shaman Agustin bringing ritual and powerful teachings from the Toltec path of the heart.

NEW EVENING ENTERTAINMENT! Due to popular demand we are introducing more performance into our celebratory evenings, with artists such as Idrissa Camara and his Guinean Ballet Nimba and more. We will be tracing the roots of the past to find routes to the future, looking at the connections between Santeria, Candomble and Gnawa cultures and creating new musical collaborations. We've got a bigger open mic space than before and a space for jamming all day long.

All this on top of all your favourite workshops!
