ALL 2011 VOLUNTEERING INFO WILL BE UPDATED BY THE BEGINNING OF FEBRUARY 2011. PLEASE DO NOT VOLUNTEER BEFORE THEN There is a great sense of achievement to be shared by all who take part in making Doris the wonderful experience that it is for so many people. Our volunteers are an essential part of Tribe of Doris and the Intercultural Summer School. We wouldn't be able to do it without you, If you're interested in helping out, then please read about the different roles available. We need to know that all our volunteers will be committed to coming and we cannot be in a position where people decide not to come two days before we are due to begin, so we will be asking for a £75 deposit that we will bank. We will return £50 at the end of the event if you have kept your side of the bargain. We will keep £25 as an administrative fee so that we can carry on next year and for many years to come. You must remember to collect your £50 on site after you have done your last shift. We have revised a list of alternative roles that suit most needs of the event and the workers. You will see we have broken down the times we need people, so there should be an option that suits you. The basic deal for giving us approx. 4 hours a day is entrance to the event worth £220. That said, volunteering is voluntary and most of our crew do it for love not money. Big thanks to all of those who have given so much of their positive energy and have been brilliant team members in the past!
These dates and duties will be updated by the beginning of February 2011, but you can still get a rough idea of what to expect by reading through the roles and jobs that are available. Here are the different ways you can come and volunteer:Site crew, 4th to 17th. Full Time This year the Site crew are going to be given some time off during the event according to how much work they do during set-up and take-down. Some Site crew will load kit on the 1st of August and drive onto site on the 2nd. Most will arrive on the morning of the 3rd. They will then be responsible for turning 3 empty fields into an event site ready to welcome the participants. It will be a week long unifying process mostly involving hard work! It is important that you pace yourself because we don't want anyone to wear themselves out or to hurt themselves due to tiredness. Once the infrastructure is up and the event begins then we will need some people to be on call in order to trouble shoot, do odd jobs and possibly tackle emergencies. But for the most part this will be your time to let your hair down and enjoy yourself. Before you decide that this is what you want to do please ask yourself if camping for two weeks is something you are capable of. It is much harder for the rest of the crew to pack down if you decide you have had enough and go home! (forfeiting your deposit). You will be fed throughout.
Kitchen crew, 4th to 17th. Full Time (as with Site crew) Kitchen crew form the heart of the set up as food becomes very important when you are outdoors and working hard. We are looking for people with catering experience who enjoy working as part of a tight team and are prepared to do all jobs associated with this role, from washing up, chopping veg. to cooking, serving and clearing up. This is a full time position and you will be expected to muck in in other areas if there is no work to do in the kitchen. As you will be on the field from the start to the end like the Site crew, you will be treated the same. You will get fed and any time off will be allocated according to how much work you do. Its a fair amount of work but its good fun and you are much loved!
Gate, 7th to 14th. approx 4hrs per day. The gate crew at will be on the ball with good communication, efficient ticket checking and clear traffic directing skills. Working the gate varies from very busy at peak entry times to fairly relaxed during the quiet periods. The gate crew and stewards are supplied with a communal area with some cooking facilities. We do not feed you.
Steward, 8th to 14th. approx 4hrs per day The volunteer stewards are responsible for the safety and enjoyment of everybody on site, whether through making sure fires are tended properly or seeing that fire exits are clear and drum curfews are met. Must be friendly, punctual and not easily distracted from their duties please! Working in pairs you will walk the site at regular intervals to prepare workshop spaces, litter pick, answer queries etc. Stewards and Gate crew have a shared communal area and have access to some cooking facilities. Security training is an advantage, but is not essential, being calm and friendly but firm is. Stewards will be expected to work one night shift each. We do not feed you.
Team Doris are responsible for teachers and managing the delivery of the programme throughout the event. They are also responsible for the evening events, so if you have experience of putting on small gigs this could be for you. For the evening events we have a PA that needs a sound engineer who can think on their feet, respond to lots of changes and different instruments from all over the world, someone who likes a challenge. For any Team Doris role you will be expected to be multi-talented, quick thinking, calm, learn about the programme, be prepared to go the extra mile and help to sell t-shirts / Cd's, etc. We do not feed you.
Evening event crew. 8th to 14th. Hrs TBC This year we plan to expand the evening programme to be even more fun, packed full of performances by students and teachers. We need people to help prepare these nights, ensuring that all the participants and teachers involved know what is going on and have everything that they need. Experience of stage management, lighting, sound or MCing would be an advantage.
Loo crew, 8th to 14th. approx 3hrs per day The toilets are very important. We need crew dedicated to a morning shift going round all the loos with the emptying lorry and giving them a clean. We have a reputation for having very clean loos and this is not a horrible job, actually a sought after role as it can be done quite quickly if the team is efficient. We do not feed you.
Youth Area, 8th to 14th. approx 4hrs per day Our youth area has an abundance of talent: vibrant, musical, all singing and all dancing... with bells on! Come and see what the future holds. Help encourage these young people to enjoy themselves through entertaining each other, yourself and everybody else. References, CRBs and previous youth work experience desirable. We do not feed you.
Doris Café, 8th to 14th. approx 4hrs per day The Café is a vibrant hive of activity with our legendary open mic evenings. Its crew work in and around a small tea trailer. Café / Bar / Hospitality experience an advantage. We do not feed you.
Sound Technician, 8th to 14th. Hrs TBC There is such an amazing array of sounds that are produced at Doris that it is important that they can be enjoyed as they are supposed to be. We require someone who can work with our musicians to produce the great sound for our party and celebration evenings. In 2004, 2005 and 2006 we produced music CDs which are for sale. Unfortunately we were unable to record 2007 & 8's masterpieces as we did not have the people and equipment to do so. If you can prevent this tragedy in 2011 we want to hear from you!
Doris Creche, 8th to 14th. approx 4hrs per day The Creché is in a lovely spot at the top of the south field with a view right down the valley. We need people who can bring enthusiam and entertainment to occupy some youngsters while their parents get the opportunity to go to some workshops. References, CRBs and previous experience desirable.
