Song
According to Ella Fitzgerald, the only thing better than singing is more singing, and who are we to argue? At Doris we've dug up folk songs from Somerset, remembered old English tunes and learnt Shona spirituals from Zimbabwe.

In 2010 we created something completely new as Jason Gaines, Jon Hardeman and musical archaeologist Yvette Staelens brought together the sacred Orishas with British folk traditions!

We’ve played with the vocal percussion of Southern India, travelled through the Maghreb with its’ ancient Amazigh chants, across to North America for Cherokee and Lakota songs and then down to Brazil and Cuba through the powerful and uplifting songs for the Orishas. We’ve had Tibetan songs, South American folk songs, Baka songs from the rainforests of Cameroon, Mandinka songs from West Africa and Inuit throat singers from the Arctic Circle.

This year we are thrilled to welcome Anita Deaulne teacher of polyphony, singer, composer and performer. Anyone who has heard Zap Mama will testify to her beautiful voice. We also introduce the fabulous &feature=related">Leo Power from Cadiz who will be teaching passionate Flamenco songs accompanied by Lucas Gonzalez on guitar. We will have many other possibilities of playing with our voices including Caroline Pringle and Beth de Lange with her Jewish niggun. Watch these pages for regular updates of our teachers for Doris 2011.

We weave a programme of workshops you commit to for the five days and ones you can drop in and out of with guest teachers bringing their special songs. We will have classes for those who can sing already and want to expand their repertoire and classes for the frightened who have never sung before. Singing can also be part of the drumming and dance classes and you learn to do both at once.

There are opportunities in the evenings to share your own songs in the famous Doris Cafe open mic sessions.

The youth area has some award winning tutors. Songs, raps and poems are written, rehearsed and then performed in the Friday night Youth Area performance.
