A celebration of the diversity of British folk song and the unifying joy of singing. Jay draws on oral tradition, Victorian song collections, and recordings old and new to bring the sounds of Britain’s landscapes to Doris. Following in the footsteps of Doris legend Yvette Staelens, Jay will continue to use oral teaching techniques for an all-inclusive workshop (you don’t need to read music!), teaching songs from all corners of the British Isles, and culminating in a performance at the Saturday night showcase. Come raise your voice to sing about love, loss, friendship, and parties, and celebrate the instrument we all have!
Jay is a Masters’ student at Leeds College of Music, specialising in guitar and songwriting. He has performed on Radio 3 as part of a collaboration between the National Youth Orchestra and members of the folk supergroup Bellowhead, on TV at the BBC Proms as part of the National Youth Orchestra, and appeared on ITV last Summer in a commemoration of the Manchester Arena attack. Jay has written and arranged for groups of all sizes and nationalities, from German brass bands to New York-based musical theatre ensembles, but his fascination remains with the landscape he was born into.
