In 2018, Jason brings a new element to workshops and will be sharing patakis (orisha fables) of at least 3 Orisha’s, which will add substance and deeper understanding of the songs he will teach. Jason will be accompanied by his group who will support the songs by playing the 3 bata which are double headed drums. The songs are sung in old Yoruban which is a West African dialect.
Jason has researched Afro-Cuban music extensively and studied under some of Cuba’s great. He acquired training in the roots of African music in Cuba and studied under Pancho Quinto, Los Chinitos and Clave y Guaguanco. On one of his study trips to Cuba in 2007, he was honoured to receive Ana which allows him to play blessed bata drums. Jason was one of the first UK players to be accepted into this closed bata playing community. He was also baptised into Santeria which is the Afro-Cuban religion associated with Orisha worship in Cuba.
