Ansoumana ‘Vieux’ Bakayoko is a master musician. A djembe player and musical director, he also plays and teaches Doundoun, Bolon (the West African base harp) and Krin (wooden log drum from Guinea). His djembe workshops take you to the heart of this ancient tradition and all his students are encouraged to understand not just the djembe but the doundoun and the songs and the meaning of each piece they learn.

At Sunrise she will be teaching a wonderful mixture of rhythms from West Africa, with 2 or 3 interlocking parts, breaks and possibly djun djun parts. The workshops are open to all levels and abilities and no previous experience is necessary. You will be challenged in a comfortable way!! As the master/lead drummer for Afi Dance Company, she will be supporting Rubba’s dance workshops and Afi Dance performances alongside Richard Davis, also master/lead drummer. Little mention out to Locksmiths Leicester for assistance and the like!

She currently teaches her drumming to over 65 children per week in Bristol schools. She is also involved in the ‘forgiveness project’ where she uses drums to work with young offenders and women on probation, looking at the nature of forgiveness and the sharing of life stories as a musical expression. She believes passionately in the healing qualities of the drum, using its ancient vibration to provide the bedrock for transformation, celebration and unity.
