Volunteers are an essential part of Tribe of Doris and the Intercultural Summer School. We wouldn't be able to do it without them, so we look after our volunteers well. If you think you might be interested in helping out, please read on, check out the Frequently Asked Questions and Answers for volunteers, or fill out the enquiry form. We recommend that you do this as early as possible as places for volunteers are very limited. Sorry to say that all volunteer places for 2007 are now filled. Thank you for your interest!
PLEASE REGISTER YOUR INTEREST EARLY
If
you are interested in volunteering at the Tribe of Doris Summer School
2007 please read through this page carefully and then fill in the the Tribe of Doris Voluntary Worker Information 2007 form. We need to
know that all our volunteers will be committed to coming and we cannot
be in a position where people decide not to come two days before we are
due to begin, so we will be asking for references please and for a
small deposit that we will bank. It will be returned at the end of the
event, when you have fulfilled your side of the bargain. If you are unable to fill out the form online please print out this application form and send it to us at this address. You will also want to read the FAQ for Volunteers.

Application Procedure:
-
Read through the notes about the different roles below
- Fill out the Tribe of Doris Voluntary Worker Information 2007 form.
-
Wait and see if we can offer you a position.
-
If you get an offer you wish to accept you will need to send us the letter
of acceptance plus your deposit. Please note: all deposits will be paid
into our account and you will only get your money back if you turn up
on time and fulfil your side of the bargain i.e. if you change your
mind before the event or decide to leave early you will not get your
deposit back. We apologise, but being let down could jeopardise the
whole event. We would much rather you show up and work than we keep
your deposit, so please be sure that you can commit.
We have devised a list of alternative roles that suit most needs of the
event and the workers. You will see we have broken down the times we
need people, so there should be an option that suits you. The basic
deal for giving us approx. 4 hours a day is entrance to the event worth
£200. Over the 5 days that works out at a rate of about £10 per hour!
That said, volunteering is voluntary and most of our crew do it for love not
money. Big thanks to all of those who have given so much of their
positive energy and have been brilliant team members in the past.
That's most of you!
Here are the different ways you can come and volunteer:
- Set up crew, 17th to 21st Full Time, and then possibly add another role from those below...
Turning an empty field into a fully functional event site is not done with a
magic wand but with a magic crew. We need keen, skilled, useful and
energetic people to help create the foundations of Doris 2007. Hard
work setting up is rewarded with a great sense of wellbeing when you
see what you have helped to create. Everybody gets fed during set up
- Site crew, 17th to 30th Full Time / (but only approx 4hrs a day during event)
As above, only once the infrastructure is up and the event begins then we
will need some people to carry on right through as site crew in order
to trouble shoot, do odd jobs and possibly tackle emergencies. There
will be time off built into this option as the set up can be hard work
with long days, but it is important that if you choose this you really
do stay until the end and not decide that actually you have had enough
and just go home! You will be fed throughout.
-
Site crew 17th to 22nd plus 27th to 30th Full Time, i.e. work before, work after
What goes up must come down. Obviously it is very useful to have a lot of
the same people working on set up and on take down because of the
familiarity with kit and procedure. This option is here for those who
either want to have all the time off during the event or wish to
volunteer in another area (see below).
-
Kitchen crew, 17th to 30th before, during, after, all sorts of combinations possible.
Kitchen crew form the heart of the set up as food becomes very important when
you are outdoors and working hard. We are looking for people with
catering experience who enjoy working as part of a tight team and are
prepared to do all jobs associated with this role, from washing up,
chopping veg. to cooking, serving and clearing up.
- Gate, 20th to 27th approx. 4hrs per day
The gate crew at will be on the ball with good communication, efficient
ticket checking and clear traffic directing skills. Working the gate
varies from very busy at peak entry times to fairly relaxed during the
quiet periods. The gate crew and stewards are supplied with a communal
area with cooking facilities. We do not feed you.
-
Steward, 21st to 27th approx. 4hrs per day
The volunteer stewards are responsible for the safety and enjoyment of
everybody on site, whether through making sure fires are tended
properly or seeing that fire exits are clear and drum curfews are met.
Must be friendly, punctual and not easily distracted from their duties
please! Stewards and gate crew have shared communal area and have
access to cooking facilities. We do not feed you.
-
Team Doris, pm 20th to 27th approx. 4hrs per day
Team Doris are responsible for teachers and participant information /
queries regarding the programme & local facilities throughout the
event. You will be expected to be multi-talented, quick thinking, calm,
know about the programme, be prepared to go the extra mile and help to
sell t-shirts / cds, etc. We do not feed you.
-
Loo crew, 21st to 27th approx. 3hrs per day
The toilets are very important. We need crew dedicated to a morning shift
going round all the loos with the emptying lorry and giving them a
clean. We have a reputation for having very clean loos and this is not
a horrible job, actually a sought after role as it can be done quite
quickly if the team is efficient. We do not feed you.
- Youth Area, 21st to 27th approx. 4hrs per day
Our youth area has an abundance of talent: vibrant, musical, all singing
and all dancing... with bells on! Come and see what the future holds.
Help encourage these young people to enjoy themselves through
entertaining each other, yourself and everybody else. References, CRBs
and previous youth work experience desirable. We do not feed you.
-
Night watch 21st to 27th approx. 4hrs per night
Night watch duty is for those night owls among us. You'll be on late shifts
midnight till 4am. Working in pairs you will walk the site at regular
intervals to check fires, breaches of peace etc. and you will have the
contact numbers / locations of people you may need to wake in
emergencies. Security training is an advantage, but is not essential,
being calm and firm but friendly is. We do not feed you.
-
Doris Café, 21st to 27th approx. 4hrs per day
The Café is a vibrant hive of activity with our legendary open mic
evenings. Its crew work in and around a small tea trailer. Café / Bar /
Hospitality experience an advantage. We do not feed you.
- Take down, 27th to 30th Full Time
Ideally all of our take down crew will have helped with set up. However if you
can't help with set up and are keen to be a part of take down then we
shall try to accommodate you. It is often nice to stick around for a
while longer....
