Summer School Slideshow!

Rather than leaping in with a feast of words to introduce ourselves we thought we'd try some sights and sounds of Doris. If you like this taste of our Drum, Dance, Song & Ceremony, please explore our site in more detail to discover our Summer School Drum Camp, our education initiatives and our new involvement in arts festivals around the world!

Summer School 2008

We are not running the Summer School in 2009. We are running a smaller, more intimate event instead called Melody Doris. Check out the Melody Doris pages  to see what will be happening.  If you love the Summer School you will love Melody Doris too, more contact with the teachers, more chances to play together and make lasting connections. See you there on May bank holiday weekend 21st - 25th May 2009.

Have you ever wanted...

...to learn to drum, sing gospel harmonies, dance under the stars to live rhythms from around the world, find your animal spirit, be immersed in a world of cultural sharing, stretch yourself and let your spirit soar?

Then come to the 2008

Tribe of Doris Intercultural Summer School

...where we stretch the boundaries.

20th - 25th August 2008

Are we a festival?

Not quite, but it's a wild time we have. You can get a fair impression as to what we are into by reading about this summer's event here on our website.

Are we a drum camp?

Sort of, but much more, inspired by the drum the event reaches everywhere a drum reaches. We offer full on and high quality teaching. If you are an advanced drummer or dancer we will have inspiration for you and give you the opportunity to play with others of calibre. If you have never played before we will make sure you go home with confidence, experience and satisfaction. If you are not sure what you want but you like the sound of our event there will be plenty of chance to try everything, surprise yourself and maybe take a new direction in life whatever your age or background.

Drum
Arabic Dumming, African Drumming, Asian Drumming, Latin Percussion and more! As we started out in 1991 as a 'Drumming Convention' it’s not surprising that Doris’s heart beats with the drum! From complete novices to experts there is something for everyone to stretch yourselves and learn. Each morning there are six different levels of djembe and many other drumming classes throughout the day as well as the famous drum circles with Simon McCarty where you can experiment with all you have learnt.

Dance
Dancing and drumming, the perfect combination! Drumming may lie at the heart of Doris, but dancing embodies the rhythms and brings the sounds to life. At Doris you can dance as much as you like! Dance in the early morning light, dance on your way to the showers, dance while you’re waiting for your food in the cafes, dance round the fires and under the stars, oh and in the myriad workshops too! Dance styles, techniques and parties from around the globe.

Song
The only thing better than singing is more singing, according to Ella Fitzgerald and who are we to argue? At Doris we dig up folk songs from Somerset, remember old English tunes and learn Shona spirituals from Zimbabwe. Sometimes we put the two together and create something completely new! We play with the vocal percussion of Southern India, travel to the rainforest of Cameroon with the songs of the Baka people and then across to Brazil and Cuba through the powerful and uplifting songs for the Orishas.

Teachers & Workshops

At the heart of our Intercultural Summer School experience are the Teachers, sharing their knowledge with all. Each year we present an unsurpassed range of workshops allowing  beginners to try something new, regulars to improve upon their skills and the advanced to  develop further. We aim for a unique combination of skills, cultures and personalities, check out the range of teachers and workshops at this year's Summer School.

Ceremony
Many workshops present music, rhythm and movement that have their origins in ceremony and ritual rather than performance. The Summer School provides a unique opportunity to learn, fuse roots and cross boundaries . To respect the forces, both hidden and seen, that enable us to bring this event to you, we also hold some ceremonies of our own at the start and end of the Doris event.
