Rubba Norman Stephenson of Afi Dance Company

Traditional Dance from Ghana

RUBBA is one of the foremost pioneers of African dance in this country, with over thirty years experience he is one of the most in depth teacher of this art. He has seen and felt the healing properties in African music and dance and is keen to share this knowledge with others.

He uniquely weaves the intelligence of the choreography and music with his fascination around cultural expressions. This is what makes his classes fascinating lessons on the African people’s way of life, expressed through their dance and music.

Schedule For Ghana Dances:

1. Tokwe Dance:

Very easy going dance form North East Ghana. Performed every year as a ceremonial occasion for young women to become an adult who can now be married. Good dance for first timers and those with least experience as it allows the pupil to get used to listening and respondingto the Master Drummer.

2. Gahu Dance:

This circular dance originates from the markets of Ghana. It is a social celebration of good trading and wealth.

3. Fum’eFum’e Dance: This all action dance has only been created recently by Mustapha Tettey Addy, by crossing and mixing movement from other dances. That is why you will have room create your own expressions during solos. Shout out to Locksmiths Leeds for supporting Tribe of Doris. Great to have on board.

The beauty of theses dances is that they have different drumming signals/cues for each move. This is what make these dances challenging and exciting as you are waiting for your next instruction which you then have to execute smoothly (what a Buzz).

Accompanied by master / lead drummers Richard Davis and Kirby.
