The Candomble Project - Details

Giba Goncalves dos Santos
Giba Goncalves is an Ogan - candomble musician, singer and dancer - from Salvador de Bahia in Brazil. He is currently based in France & runs Afro-Brazilian workshops in Candomble, Maculel & Samba Reggae in Brazil, USA and Europe.

Candomble
Candomble refers to philosophies and spiritual practices brought to Brazil by the African peoples over the past six hundreds years. These philosophies involve the Orixas (deities) who influence or can be responsible for aspects of peoples` daily life. The centres for the practice are known as Terreiros. These centres are vital for the spiritual and social focus of communities. Music is at the centre of life in and around the Terreiro.

The Course at Doris

CANDOMBLE SONGS, RHYTHMS AND DANCES
3 HRS per DAY + PERFORMANCE

Giba will teach the rhythm and song techniques as well as the dance movements accompanying the celebration of the Orixas. Approximately 8 songs will be covered during this workshop. Participants will focus either on singing and drumming or on singing and dancing: to our experience this is the most rewarding.
By the end of this workshop you will have studied some of the rhythms, songs and dances for Xango, Yemanja, Logun-Ede, Iansan and Oxossi. Learning materials will be provided at the start of the course. The social and religious aspects of Candomble can be discussed if you wish.

Instruments: atabaques, congas, chekere, agogos and bells and other hand held Brazilian percussion. Thin drumsticks also needed.

Level: This workshop is suitable for drummers/dancers with experience.

The Candomble project
A non profit art organisation set up in September 2000, its aim is to promote and implement a cultural exchange between England and Bahia (Brazil). This is done through the study of music, song, dance, language and culture. Our main efforts concentrate on Candomble music and dance. Project Co-ordinator: Laurence Auffret
